Quite often the weakness of a classic turntable is the manufacturer’s cost-cutting flimsy plinth. If you want a sturdier and better looking turntable plinth, one can be custom-made for you with a wood and finish of your choice. I make box plinths for tables like the Thorens TD150 and Linn Sondek LP12 and heavy Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) plinths for the heavy idler drives like the Garrard 301 or Lenco L75.
Here are some of the plinths I have built:
Garrard 301 with French Walnut
This CLD plinth is made from 18mm plywood, is veneered in French Walnut veneer and has a high gloss piano finish.
Garrard 401 with Bubinga
This CLD plinth is made from 18mm Birch plywood with a 22mm MDF base. The plinth is wrapped with fine cuts of Bubinga with a satin poly-wax finish.
The removable armboard is also Bubinga and has a dual arm configuration that can fit either a 9” or 12” tonearm. There is a second tonearm position for a Rega mount-type arm. A dustcover was custom manufactured.
Thorens TD150 in White Ash
This box plinth is made from White Ash with a satin poly-wax finish. The armboard is slightly wider than the original.
Thorens TD150 with Bubinga
This box plinth is made with Bubinga and has a satin poly-wax finish. The armboard is slightly wider than the original. The plinth rests on a 22mm MDF base with high feet.
Technics SP10 MkII in Kiaat & Birch
This is a combination box and CLD plinth. The top plate is a combination of MDF and 18mm Birch ply and the sides are Kiaat with White Oak and Panga Panga inlays. The removable armboard has a dual arm configuration that can fit either a 9” or 12” tonearm.
